How a wave of Norwegian football supporters brought an irresistible surge of warmth to Porto’s historic squares.
Porto on a quiet day is already a city overflowing with warmth and friendliness. But every photographer knows that the magic of travel lies in spontaneous moments—those unexpected sparks of energy that turn a memorable visit into an unforgettable story.

A Sea of Color & Southern Hospitality
On one afternoon during our stay, something extraordinary swept through the old stone corridors. “Red’s in town!” Everywhere we turned in the historic center, we began bumping into jolly groups of young men and women wearing vibrant red shirts proudly emblazoned with the Norwegian flag. It turned out that a European football match was taking place that evening between FC Porto and a visiting Norwegian club.

For a few glorious hours, these enthusiastic visitors literally took over the heart of the city. But far from causing disruption, their presence was a joyous explosion of life. They gathered along the riverside cafes under the shadows of the Dom Luís I Bridge, singing songs, laughing, hoisting national flags, and sharing toasts with local Porto residents who welcomed them with big smiles and open arms.

The Photographer’s Lens
This spontaneous afternoon captured the essence of what makes Porto so special. It isn’t just the historic architecture or the famous wine—it is the infectious joie de vivre, the feeling that no matter where you come from or why you are here, Porto wraps its arms around you and makes you feel right at home

On Porto’s riverside, I photographed this wonderfully stylish woman as she raised her old-fashioned camera toward me. A few moments later, the roles reversed: she took my portrait, then produced a vintage-style newspaper with my photo printed right on the front page. An unexpected little piece of street theatre—and the most charming souvenir from the day.
